GREAT THICKET NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE - A 26,000 ACRE FOCUS AREA BEING CONSIDERED THAT INCLUDES ELIOT, SOUTH BERWICK & BERWICK
Over the past century, many shrublands and young forests across the Northeast have been cleared for development or have grown into mature forests. As this habitat has disappeared from much of the landscape; the populations of more than 65 songbirds, mammals, reptiles pollinators, and other wildlife that depend on it have fallen alarmingly.

In response, U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service has approved Great Thicket National Wildlife Refuge, a system of public lands that would be dedicated to managing shrubland habitat for wildlife and enjoyed by visitors whenever possible.  We are considering a 26,000 acre focus area in Eliot, South Berwick and Berwick and hope to protect core areas of about 2,000 areas from willing landowners.  Much more information is available at  (https://www.fws.gov/northeast/refuges/planning/lpp/greatthicketLPP.html)

End 68 Hours of Hunger Program The Eliot Town Office is an official collection site for End 68 Hours of Hunger.

This program puts nourishing food in the hands of school children to carry with them through the weekend. Bags currently provide two breakfasts, two lunches and 3 dinners per child. But they very rarely provide snacks.

Until Now…

Pack a Snack Sack End 68 Hours of Hunger will now be providing empty lunch sacks for the donation of snack items. Those willing to donate can take an empty lunch sack available at the Eliot Town Office to fill with the donated items and then simply return it to the collection site. This will be an ongoing addition to the program.

Snacks such as raisins, goldfish, cookies, nuts, trail mix, popcorn and any other single size snack that you think the children will enjoy will be appreciated.

Are you a part of one of the many clubs/organizations in town? How about picking a month and “Pack a Sack” as a group event? The volunteers can drop off and pick up the lunch sacks at your location if this is more convenient.
